Lake Life Basics: Everyday Life at Smith Mountain Lake

Groceries, doctors, internet, schools, and how people actually get around a lake with 500 miles of shoreline.

The lake by the numbers

20,600 acres of water. Over 500 miles of shoreline — more than the coast of some states. Roughly 40 miles long. Full pond at 795 feet above sea level. Three counties: Bedford to the north, Franklin to the south and west, and a slice of Pittsylvania at the far end of the Blackwater arm.

Shopping and services

Westlake Towne Center at Routes 122 and 616 is the everyday hub — groceries, pharmacy, hardware, specialty shops, and the Visitor Center. Bridgewater Plaza at the Hales Ford Bridge is the social hub — restaurants, boat rentals, and the place people mean when they say "the Plaza." For Target and Costco, it is Bedford (about twenty minutes) or Roanoke (about thirty).

Healthcare

Carilion Clinic Smith Mountain Lake in Westlake handles primary and urgent care. Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital is about twenty minutes from the north shore. Carilion Roanoke Memorial is the Level I trauma center about thirty to forty minutes out, and Centra Lynchburg General is roughly forty-five.

Schools

Bedford County Public Schools serve the north side, with Jefferson Forest and Staunton River high schools. Franklin County Public Schools serve the south and west, feeding Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount. Private options include New Covenant Schools and Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, about forty-five minutes.

Internet and working from here

Shentel, Comcast, and Starlink all serve parts of the lake, which is why remote work took hold so quickly here after 2020. Coverage is genuinely address-specific — confirm service at the exact property, not the zip code.

Learning to navigate

Locals give directions by channel marker. The Roanoke channel runs from R1 near the dam west and northwest to R80 near the Hardy Bridge. Tributary channels are numbered from where they meet the main channel and count up — Craddock Creek starts at C1 and runs to C8 near Mariners Landing. Red and green lights mark the channel at night. Within a season you will be telling people you live "just past R34" and meaning it.
